You’ve booked with me and you’re already thinking.. what will I wear, do I want my session during sunrise or sunset, and how can I get my wild toddler to sit still for a moment? Client experience is one of the things I truly try to maximize in my business. I want it to be stress-free so you can create the images you desire. That is why I created this blog post with several tips that can make you feel prepared and confident for your session.
Choosing a location
Choosing a location can be daunting, especially when you’re met with a list of 10-20. If you have a special place that you and your family enjoy, definitely discuss with me how you can coordinate your session there. If you’ve booked a newborn session you might opt to have your session in the home to showcase the nursery. However, if you don’t have any places that come to mind, don’t stress! I have a list of locations I use that I know will provide beautiful images.
Deciding on Sunrise or Sunset
As a photographer, I like to shoot around sunrise and about an hour to an hour and a half before sunset to get beautiful and soft light. This choice is purely yours and is dependent on your schedule. If you are someone who isn’t comfortable shooting around crowds or others sunrise might be the perfect option for you as it is quieter and kids have more energy since it is the start of the day. However, if you have a busy schedule and need your session after work hours sunset may be a better option for you (depending on the season and set hours)
What should my family and I wear?
This is often the most asked question from all clients, and it’s simple! Here are my tips when choosing outfits
- Coordinate, don’t match.
I recommend choosing a color palette and trying to pick outfits that are within that range. Light textures and layers can flow nicely together as opposed to matching outfits which can take away the focus from the subject matter, you!
- Have one person wear a light pattern
I recommend having one person in the party wearing a pattern and the rest of the family wearing textures/ or colors that complement it. Try having dad wear a button-up and the rest of the family wearing colors that tie into it or mom wearing a lightly patterned dress. You can browse my family photo outfit inspo board here!
Prepare for the littles
If you’re a mom/dad of young ones I recommend bringing along their favorite snacks/ or stuffed animals to help create a comfortable environment. Let your kids know a couple of days in advance about the photos you’ll be taking so they can create a positive connection with the idea and will be more excited! I know you may think it is stressful when your toddlers are wandering or they’re running around wild but I can promise that sometimes the best photos come from allowing kids to organically be kids.
If you’re nervous.. its okay!
Honestly, as a photographer myself I even get a bit nervous when getting my own photos taken. Rest assured that I will always strive to capture the photos that truly showcase your family which means never putting you in poses that you feel uncomfortable. If you have any questions at all, ask away! Im here to help make your experience an easy one. I can’t wait to meet you and your family and provide cherishable memories.
